Protein therapeutics

- Nivethita M

All the life processes happening in a living organism is highly centered to the microscopic molecular level, with the strong influence of functional chemical species called peptides. These peptides are recognized for being highly selective and efficacious and, at the same time, relatively safe and well tolerated. These peptides are crucial to the development of new drug leads and also understand its physiological and pharmacological value. It is very important for understanding their mechanism to find solutions for the microbial infections. The relative peptide-peptide interactions happening within a biological system, the fluids and many other biomolecules are necessary for strengthening its biological activity.

Pharmaceutics and Pharmacology dealing companies and industries are constantly interlinked with the other sectors like biotechnology, genomics, proteomics etc., for collaborative research to establish new drug leads. One of them is the multifunctional peptides representing more than one pharmacological activity, such as dual or even triple agonism. These also have additional biological functions such as immune stimulation and wound healing. Trends in this area of research helps in improving the plasma half-life stay in the body and also enzymatic degradation preventing the inactivation of the molecular cleavage sites. This approach is done with the enhancement of secondary structure of the peptides.

This enhancement involves the insertion of an SIP(Structure Inducing Probe)- tail, lactam bridges, and stabling or clipping of peptide sequences, or by cyclization. Several strategies are being laid out for future exploration of the peptides which are under strong need for the modern day world of living.
